Il genere Hyphessobrycon comprende 109 specie di piccoli pesci d'acqua dolce, appartenenti alla famiglia Characidae, con sottofamiglia incerta.
Descrizione
Tendenzialmente la forma del corpo degli Hyphessobrycon ricorda un rombo: testa a punta, profili dorsale e ventrale arcuati (ad angolo ottuso) e peduncolo caudale stretto e corto. I fianchi sono molto compressi. Alcune specie sono più magre e allungate. La colorazione varia da grigio argenteo a rosso, con diverse soluzioni.
Distribuzione e habitat
Queste specie sono diffuse in Sudamerica, nei bacini idrografici dei fiumi compresi nella fascia tropicale. Abitano acque diverse.
